Have you checked out the annual gift tax exclusion lately??

My sister and I were discussing the annual gift tax exclusion at the beginning of the month (yes, a real conversation), and I realized that I had not checked the amount in years.

Do you know that the annual gift tax exclusion for 2025 is $19,000?!?!?

What this means: the annual gift tax exclusion is the amount you can gift to any individual in a calendar year without it counting towards your lifetime gift and estate tax exemption.

You can gift up to $19,000 this year to multiple individuals without triggering gift tax reporting -- for you OR them. What's more, married couples can combine their exclusions to gift up to $38,000 to each recipient.

May is the perfect month to consider this. Think: Graduations. Weddings. Peak home-buying season. If you are in a position to make such a gift -- say, to help a loved one with the downpayment on a home -- just consider how truly valuable this tax-free gift is to the recipient. Nothing says "love" like a lower mortgage amount, reduced student-loan debt, or covering wedding costs.

And if there's simply no one in your life who might benefit from your largesse, message me privately so I can provide my routing and account numbers!

The Perfect Cheese for Summer: Halloumi

I know what you're all thinking: but cheese isn't a meal. To which I answer, it CAN be if you eat enough of it!

Some of you may not be familiar with this wonder of culinary engineering. Halloumi is officially defined as "a semi-hard, unripened, brined cheese, typically made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk. It is known for its unique squeaky texture and high melting point, making it suitable for grilling or frying."

This is where the magic happens: on the grill. Normally, cheese placed directly on your grill becomes a gooey mess. Not halloumi! It can be placed on grill plates with nary a drip. Flip it and you'll get those great grill lines on both sides of the cheese. This is a great addition to your summer dinner, especially if you've invited over vegetarians. The mouth feel of the cheese -- not to mention the protein it contains -- can serve as a great substitute for (or a supplement to) meat or fish.

Halloumi originated on the island of Cyprus, but its popularity has spread throughout the Mediterranean. Ask the cheesemonger at your grocery store: you may not see halloumi on the shelf, but they likely have some behind the counter... especially this time of year!

Come back next month for a new installment of “Best Thing I Ever Ate.”

April 2025: Better than Never
France: Mieux vaut tard que jamais. = Better late than never. If I were to have a life motto, this would be it. Some people have an easy time of starting a career... meeting their soulmate... growing into their personality. I am not one of those people. It took me years (and two degrees) to gain entry to my desired career field. I married at 43 (fortunately, well -- still love that guy!). It...
March 2025: Death and Taxes
Ireland: You'll never plough a field by turning it over in your mind.   Ouch!! When I discovered this Irish saying, it was like looking in a mirror while a truck hit me. I am a planner by nature, but that attribute can be a serious character flaw when the planning takes the place of work. I like to visualize my actions in advance of performing them, as long taught by everyone from athletic t...
February 2025: Love (and assets) are in the air
Italy: Meglio soli che male accompagnati. = Better alone than poorly accompanied.   Since we are in the month of February, many of my entrepreneurial colleagues are using love themes in their blogs and newsletters. So am I, but in a slightly different fashion! Those who know me well know that I didn't marry until I was in my forties. This wasn't by choice but by circumstance, the circumstanc...
